Carrageen Bliss

Carrageen Bliss shows a seated figure with her head raised upwards, appreciating the rays of light upon her face. Strands of the seaweed carrageen moss, also known as dulsk, mimic the woman’s veins beneath her skin.

The state of Bliss is described as 'a profound experience of perfect happiness, joy, and inner peace, often characterized by a sense of tranquility, unity, and transcendence of worldly suffering‘. As with the rest of this series, this work is based underwater, a place where emotions are revealed. In this work, bliss is appreciated as one of those fleeting moments of intense beauty and joy in daily life.

“Sea People” is a series of paintings inspired by the tale of the lost village of Cill StúifÍn, imagining its vanished inhabitants. Seaweed plays a prominent role in my work, both for its environmental significance and its similarity to the way human hair moves underwater. In “Sea People” seaweed acts as a vessel for emotion, conveying what is internal and not always visible on the surface.
