The Brothers
‘The Brothers’ is based on a portrait of former President of Ireland and poet, Michael D. Higgins, and his brother John Higgins. Taken from a communion photograph, it shows the boys in their communion outfits, holding a toy cow and a horse - items mentioned in the poem ‘Brothers’, by Michael D. Higgins.
The background depicts the Langlin map of Ireland, common in primary schools throughout Ireland in the mid-19th century. The map documents places associated with Higgins childhood and early adulthood. The gold words written along the wooden floorboards are from Higgin’s poem.
St. Brigid's Well, Liscannor, is depicted in the sea area behind the boys with a magic eel. This holy well connects to tales of Irish heritage and culture.
Watercolour and mixed media on paper.
